Yahoo releases new Flickr app for iPad

Flickr owner Yahoo passed along some good news for iPad owners Friday with the release of a Flickr app specifically for the Apple tablet.

Flickr has been available on select iOS devices in the past, but these were formerly reserved for iPhone users exclusively. However, now with the new iPad-centered app anyone who has been missing their ability to use Flickr on their Apple tablet can now rest easy.

Compatibility for Flickr’s version 3.2 is widespread, as it will work on any tablet with a Retina display. This includes not just the iPad Air 2 and the new iPad mini but older versions of the devices as well.
Apple tablets with Retina displays aren’t necessarily anything new. However, Yahoo may have been prompted by Apple’s latest mobile operating system release to finally make the jump to larger-sized devices. In fact, the new Flickr app will work with any of Apple’s mobile devices as long as they’re running iOS 8.

The new app takes full advantage of the higher resolution screens, as Flickr will display high resolution images containing as many as 3 million pixels. In terms of overall resolution, the app can handle images of a resolution of around 2048 x 1056. The app will allow its users to brows Flickr feeds in either portrait or landscape mode, with both browsing mods leaving enough room for metadata and photo descriptions. The app also retains the typical commenting and search functions of older versions.

The new app also lets users take pictures directly in the app with a digital shutter, and this includes iPad users as well. In addition to being able to preview pictures before tapping the shutter, users can also avail themselves of live filters to alter the look of their image. A live histogram mode has also been added, a feature that gives the app the same sort of informational feedback that most digital SLR owners would expect. What this means for anyone using a newer version iPad is that they will be able to use the improved rear-facing camera to its fullest potential thanks to the new app features.
